Post IMC Workshop on Lichens
Venue:Mushroom Research Centre, Chiang Mai, Thailand
When: 9th – 14th August 2014 (after IMC-10)
Organizer: Dr. Robert Lücking, The Field Museum, Chicago, USA.
Other experts attending: Dr. Bibiana Moncada, Universidad Distrital, Colombia
Lichens are a complex life form: a symbiotic partnership of at least two different organisms, a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium. Apart from being aesthetically beautiful, lichens are taxonomically, morphologically, and ecologically diverse and play key functional roles in temperate and tropical ecosystems. Tropical forests, thought to be the most evolved ecosystems on earth, are also characterized by a high biodiversity of fungi and lichens, but much of these biological resources are yet to be documented. Join us for forays and a hands-on workshop and interactive dialogue exploring the world of tropical Lichens. Participants will learn about the taxonomy, evolution and molecular phylogeny of lichens and about quantitative, multivariate techniques to study lichen ecology and their applications as bioindicators.
The workshop will include:
- Field excursions to collect lichens
- Examination and identification of specimens in the laboratory
- “Hands-on” techniques for the study of lichens
- Lectures and talks on various aspects of tropical lichenology, including systematics, phylogeny, evolution, ecology, and biogeography
In addition, a visit to Doi Suthep temple, Chiang Mai Zoo, and/or Mae Sa Elephant camp will be provided.
Full workshop fee – 25,000 Baht (800 USD).Price includes airport pickup, accommodation (shared room), food, collecting trips and laboratory use.
